Cooperative Principles

1. Open and Voluntary Membership

Cooperative membership should be voluntary and available without restriction or discrimination to all persons who can make use of its services and will accept the responsibilities of membership.

2. Democratic Control

Cooperatives are democratic organizations. Their affairs should be administered by persons elected by the members and accountable to them. Members should enjoy equal rights of voting and decision making.

3. Limited Interest on Investment

Investments in the cooperative pay limited interest to insulate the members from those who would invest for speculative return.

4. Return of Surplus to Members

All net earnings, whether referred to as margins or dividends, are returned to all members based on their amount of patronage with the cooperative.

5. Education of Membership

All cooperatives should make provision for the education of their members, officers and employees, and of the general public in the principles and techniques of cooperation.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, regional and national organizations.

7. Concern for Community

While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.
